Wine is loved by many people all around the world, including Miami Beach residents. Thus, popularity for wine collecting is increasing. With relation to this, many homeowners choose to invest in a wine cellar that will preserve their finest wines properly and allow them to easily grab a bottle for dinner or to serve to their guests.
This also allows them to use their creativity by incorporating custom designs in their wine cellar. Doing so will result in a wine room that reflects the owner’s personality.
Having your own residential wine cellar also ensures that your precious wines are safely stored in a room with the ideal storage conditions, and adds value and beauty to your home. Whether you want a traditional or contemporary wine cellar, it is essential to look for a wine cellar builder that has extensive experience in the wine cellar industry, pays keen attention to detail, and offers customization options and excellent customer service.

Let’s take a look at the one of our recent projects in North Bay Road, one of the more well-to-do areas in Miami Beach, Florida. I hope this blog will give you some ideas and inspiration to start building your own wine cellar.
Contemporary Residential Wine Cellar Design in Miami Beach, Florida
A renovation of the client’s private residence had been recently done. When the client built the home, there was already an area designated for a wine room. In front of it is the dining and entertainment area.
Our client’s desire was to create a contemporary ambiance for the space. A professional team was needed, so he contacted us to build a contemporary residential wine storage for his collection. We used specific materials and incorporated features that would achieve this. Let’s discuss the features of this state-of-the-art custom wine cellar.
Modern Wine Racking
In every project that we do, we ensure that our client’s storage needs and requirements are met accordingly. Since the look and feel that the owner wanted to achieve in the wine room was contemporary, we used custom-designed, brushed stainless steel for the wine racking.
With wine racks made of this material, you don’t need to worry about the formation of rust or corrosion on the surface. They are also durable and last a long time with proper care.
These sleek and chic stainless steel wine racks were placed on the left, right, and middle wall of the wine room. The wine racks on the left and right wall of the wine room allow the bottles to be stored horizontally and are 3-bottles deep.
Laying the bottles in a horizontal position will keep the cork moist and prevent oxidation. Cork acts as a seal for wine bottles. If it dries up, it loses its sealing ability. It will also become brittle and cause unwanted oxygen to get into the wine. The result is oxidized or ruined wine.
The horizontal orientation of the bottles also allows wine labels to face up, which makes locating a particular vintage easy and convenient for the owner. We put a case storage on the lowest portion of the left and right wine rack for the owner to have extra space for wines in bulk.
The back wall of this modern custom wine cellar was installed with custom metal wine racks for bin and bulk storage. This is a practical way to store various sizes of wine bottles such as 750ml, magnum, and split wine bottles. This is beneficial for a growing wine collection, allowing more room for future additions to the owner’s collection. To maximize the space, all the wine racks were built from floor to ceiling.
Watch the video below to get a feel of the custom wine room we built for a Miami Beach wine collector.
Chic Wine Cellar Door, Flooring and Ceiling
The chic wine cellar door easily catches attention. Just like the wine racks, the entryway was a custom-brushed stainless steel and glass door.
When building a wine cellar, the wine cellar door is one of the aspects that must be considered carefully. It helps maintain the ideal temperature (55-65 degrees Fahrenheit) and humidity levels (50-60%) in the wine cellar. Without a properly-installed wine cellar door, these factors will not be stabilized, causing wine to age prematurely.
To ensure an airtight seal we installed inset glass gaskets all the way around the door. In order for the owners to lock the wine room when they’re away, we created a lock below the entry door.
The flooring is what your guests usually see first when they enter your wine cellar, and this client chose recycled metal flooring (tiles) which is a very unique product.
This added texture in the room and the brown color contrasted the steel wine racking. This type of flooring is eco-friendly and easy to maintain; all you need is mild dishwashing soap and water to clean it. Metal floor tiles are also known for their durability and design flexibility.
Another unique feature of this modern home wine cellar in Florida is the ceiling which was made of double-smoked high-reflective mirror. This changes the geometry of the entire room, creating an illusion of more space. It also provides fun from watching yourself and the wines up above.
Split Wine Cellar Refrigeration System
The right wine cellar refrigeration system, together with the door and flooring, must be installed properly to keep a stable environment where your wines are kept. This will preserve the quality of wine and let you and your guests enjoy its desirable characteristics.
In this project, we utilized a high-performance split-refrigeration system (RM Series) from US Cellar Systems. The two components (the evaporator and condenser) are installed separately. The evaporator, or the air handler, was installed nicely above the wine cellar door, hidden from the entertainment area.
There is a thermostat reader beside it used to monitor temperature and humidity in the wine room. The condenser, which is the noisy component of the wine cooling system, was placed outdoors.
Accentuating the Wine Cellar with Lighting
The overall mood and look of a wine cellar is determined by the lighting installed in it. The client was very detailed when it came to the visual appeal of the wine room. We used overhead LED lighting to highlight our client’s prized collection. LED lighting is a popular choice in wine cellars because it provides soft illumination and does not generate UV rays that can ruin wine.
The overhead lighting is flexible, allowing the owner to direct it to specific bottles in the wine racks and create a beautiful wash down on the bottles housed on the left, right, and center walls. We added lighting down the floor to provide a dramatic effect in the space.
Wine Cellar International has again built a truly unique and high-end custom wine cellar that reflects the owner’s passion for wine and contemporary style. Contemporary wine cellars are not only the trend in commercial and hospitality establishments such as restaurants, wine stores, and hotels and bars, but also in residential homes.
